History

The Arizona LGBTQ+ Archives®©
are a continuing effort of early Arizona
 Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Queer +
archives collections.

Those early efforts began collecting, preserving,
saving, securing, storing, and archiving Arizona's
Gay Lesbian Bisexual, Transgender, Queer + History
when often harassment, danger, threats &
physical violence were routinely encountered.

The focus of the Arizona LGBTQ+ Archives and its mission is the collection,
preservation, and digital virtual access of historical related Arizona LGBTQIA+ photographs,
manuscripts, event posters, various Arizona and other LGBTQIA+ related publications,
journals & diaries, documentaries, audio tapes, Super 8 & 35mm Films, Micro Film,
VHS-Beta-CD-DVD recordings of events, audio sound recordings, interviews,
original art works, LGBTQIA+ Events T-Shirts & Memorabilia along with other
 LGBTQIA+ items for inclusion into the permanent
Arizona LGBTQ+ Archives®© for their preservation
and access for current and future generations.

The Arizona LGBTQ+ Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer Intersex Asexual+ Archives collections
are security secured and maintained under national archives preservation standards.

As a community-state-multi state focused archives
founded as a physical and digital archives
 the Arizona LGBTQ+ Archives uses and pulls the concept of

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Queer, Intersex, Asexual +

into the thousands of artifacts, exhibits, items, and records being collected,
preserved, and made digitally available to the world.
 
The Arizona LGBTQ+ Archives all-volunteer archivists work closely
with many diverse LGBTQIA+ communities throughout Arizona, the United States,
and around the world developing archives that are for,
 by, and about LGBTQIA+ History it represents.
A comprehensive archives that fully encompases the many people,
organizations, events, and contributions that so many have made.

Mission Statement
The Arizona LGBTQ+ Archives of the Arizona LGBTQ+ Museum work
 with many heterogeneous Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex [LGBTQIA+],
Gender Non-Conforming, and Two Spirit Communities throughout Arizona, around the United States,
and in other countries of the world identifying, preserving, and protecting the many records,
manuscripts, papers, photographs and ephemera of LGBTQIA+ History that document
the distinct histories of these communities.

The Arizona LGBTQ+ Archives Mission:

Collecting and maintaining the many individual stories, papers, photographs, videos,
oral histories, home movies, artwork, clothing items, 
and other distinct various forms of historical records reflecting many hundreds of years
of combined generations insights and knowledges.
Areas of collecting interest are specified below in a separate Collection Development Policy
to collect and maintain these historical items and records of enduring historical significance
 to current and future organizations, community groups, safe spaces,
including identified organizational efforts supporting LGBTQIA+ lives throughout Arizona.

The Arizona LGBTQ+ Archives recognizes that the LGBTQIA+ communities are diverse
and heterogeneous and hold complicated, contradictory, as well as complementary histories
that can all come together here as valid everyday knowledges and truths.

The Arizona LGBTQ+ Archives works to engage with many communities, organizations,
and individuals to collect, preserve, and share these many histories and memories.

The Arizona LGBTQ+ Archives Collection Policy

The Arizona Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer Intersex Asexual LGBTQIA+ Archives
aquires and collects the many items and exhibits materials that are forever relevant to

LGBTQIA+ individuals, groups, and organizations involved supporting LGBTQIA+ lives.
Items collected include tens of thousands of stories, papers, records, manuscripts,
publications, ephemera, original photographs, home movies, event posters,
government records, videos, digital and many other materials,

including but not limited to artifacts, such as art, crafts, and apparel.

As one of the worlds stewards of  LGBTQIA+ histories,
the Arizona LGBTQIA+ Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer Intersex Asexual Archives
works to preserve the history of the events and people between the 1700s and 2020s
and beyond for current and future generations.
